Improved PH economy triggers more passport applicants

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) projects about 4 million passport applicants for this year alone and it's mostly because of the country's improved economy.

The expected number is a big jump from 2010’s 2.8 million applications, said DFA passport division director Ricarte Abejuela III. It began to increase annually since then. Other reasons include cheaper airline flights and demand for Filipino workers abroad.

Early this year, DFA launched its “passport on wheels” project in Metro Manila to make passport application more convenient for the people. Each van could supposedly process up to 500 applications daily.

Last August 2017, the Philippine passport validity has also been extended from five to 10 years.
