DOT: PH Tourism on the right track
Tourist arrivals in the country were up by 5.9% for months Jan-Feb this year. By Q1’s end, the percentage went up to 7.59%, as reported by the Department of Tourism (DOT).
Figures summed up to a total of 2,204,564 foreign visitors — beating last 2018’s record of 2,049,094.
“The DOT is working on enhancing our tourism products and tourism infrastructure to entice tourists to choose the Philippines as their next destination,” said DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo Puyat.
The top source market for these visits is mainly from South Korea, which has increased to 519,584 compared to last year’s 477,087. China and the US are the succeeding top visitors for Q1. Other markets include Japan, Taiwan, Australia, Canada, UK, Singapore, Malaysia, India, and Germany.
Puyat noted that this influx was due to Boracay’s reopening and improved connectivity in the country. To sustain this growth, she stated a need to prioritize adequate infrastructure, travel facilitation convenience, and better safety and security for developed tourism areas.
